GPD Internship Program

Are you passionate about law enforcement and eager to make a difference in your community? The Georgetown Texas Police Department is excited to announce our new Internship Program, offering an unparalleled opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the field of policing. As an intern with us, you’ll work alongside dedicated professionals, learn essential skills, and contribute to ensuring safety and security for all residents of Georgetown.

GPD Interns will obtain exposure to the following experiences:

  • Planning and leading programs/events
  • Assisting with marketing and social media
  • Working with boards and committees
  • Volunteer recruitment and management
  • Learning about contract programs
  • Learning policies and procedures of municipal government

The Georgetown Police Department offers several different internship opportunities during Spring, Summer, and Fall semesters for students. Internship positions are restricted to those students seeking academic credit for the semester. Prospective internship candidates must receive academic approval and credit to be considered for placement with the College Station Police Department Internship Program.

Spring 2024 Application Deadline: Dec. 8, 2023
Spring 2024 Internship Start: Jan. 22, 2024
Fall 2024 Application Deadline: June 7, 2024
Fall 2024 Internship Start: Aug. 26, 2024

Student Internship (SI)

The Georgetown Police Department has developed an unpaid internship program with many local and national universities and colleges. The Internship Program:

  • provides qualified students with practical work experience that compliments their academic course work as well as course credit
  • provides the department with an opportunity to involve students in various aspects of police work
  • is designed to provide students with an opportunity to integrate theory and practice

Students from participating institutions may perform a one term

  • Criminal Justice students may perform their internship at various locations / division throughout the police department.
  • Social Work students may perform their internship under the Family Violence Unit, Homicide Division, Victim Services Unit, Planning and Research Division, or the Sex Crimes Division.

Student Interns must complete and successfully pass the Police VIP Application Process.

Qualifications

To be eligible for our Internship Program, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • No conviction of an offense above the grade of Class B or a Class B misdemeanor within the last 10 years.
  • No placement on court-ordered community supervision or probation for any criminal offense above the grade of Class B misdemeanor, or for a Class B misdemeanor within the last ten years from the date of the court order.
  • No conviction of any offense involving Family Violence as defined by the Texas Penal Code.
  • Not discharged from the military under less than honorable conditions, or resigned to avoid such.

Alcohol and Drug Use Criteria

Circumstances surrounding the usage of alcohol, controlled substances, illegal use of prescription medication, or marijuana will be evaluated by the department on a case by case basis. Factors to be considered when determining eligibility include the type of substance used, frequency of use, if the use was experimental* and how recent was the usage.

*Experimental use is considered usage to determine the effects of a drug.

  • Applicants who have used illegal drugs beyond an experimental level are not acceptable.
  • Applicants who have used any felony grade controlled substance within the last five years are not acceptable unless the drug was prescribed by a licensed physician
  • Abuse of prescription medication within the last three years is NOT acceptable.
  • Candidates having used or consumed marijuana or any of its derivatives within the last two years are not acceptable.
  • Involvement in the illegal delivery or furnishing of any controlled substance or drug to another, with the expectation of personal benefit, will result in permanent disqualification.

Application Process

Each prospective intern candidate will complete an application and hiring process prior to beginning the internship. Each step must be completed before moving forward in the process. This will include the following steps:

  • Submitted applications will be reviewed and candidates will be notified if they will move forward for the initial oral interview
  • Initial Oral Interview
  • Personal History Statement (PHS) submission
  • Background investigation conducted by Police Department personnel
  • Fingerprint Submission
  • Final Oral Interview
  • Drug screening
  • Submit (3) original academic contracts to Human Resources
